Technical Trends in Thermal Validation - PDA Letter
Use of heat is quintessential for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical processes and impacts the critical quality attributes (CQA) of pharmaceutical products. Heat is used for cleaning, sterilization and specific unit operations involving a large variety of equipment which must be maintained in a state of validation throughout the product life cycle (development, transfer, validation, commercial manufacturing ...)

R Type Thermocouples
Type R Thermocouples
-50 to +1480°C
R type thermocouples, or platinum rhodium thermocouples have a low sensitivity (~10 µV/°C) and because of the high cost, they are used mostly for very high temperature applications. Their temperature measurement capability ranges from -50®C up to 1480®C.
T Type Thermocouples
Type T Thermocouples
–250 to 350°C
Type T thermocouple is a stable thermocouple, with very good repeatability, often used in low/very low temperature applications.
J Type Thermocouples
Type J Thermocouples
-40°C to 750°C
Type J thermocouples, or iron–constantan thermocouples have a quite narrow range (from −40 °C to +750 °C) but have a higher sensitivity of about 50 µV/°C. The upper limit of this type of thermocouple is determined by the Curie point of the iron, which is 770 °C.
K Type Thermocouples
Type K Thermocouples
-200 to +1250°C
The type K thermocouple is accurate, reliable and it covers a wide temperature range (from –200°C to 1250°C). It's inexpensive and is the most common type of thermocouple.
